What should I wear?
No matter what the weather, make sure you have good footwear. The boat tips
around even in calm conditions. Non slip, flat soled shoes are absolutely
essential, training shoes are ideal, but please try to make sure you don't
have shoes that may mark the decks. It is always colder at sea even if the
forecast is for sunshine, so bring plenty of warm clothing. Gloves and a hat
are a good idea. The decks can get wet if it rains, so quick drying trousers
are recommended, and waterproof clothing would be useful, though we do have
enough foul weather clothing for all crew.

What If I sleep aboard?
If your trip will mean spending a night aboard Enigma then a sleeping bag
is essential, and although there are cushions available, you might feel more
comfortable bringing your own pillow.
Pack any possessions in something like a soft sports bag, hard suitcases or
frame rucksacks are difficult to store. Do not bring any clothes that need
to be kept on coat hangers, as there is no spare hanging space. Enigma is
fitted with a very powerful heater for use at sea, and if we spend the night
in a Marina then we have both electric heating and a very powerful de-humidifier
to keep the cabin dry. In addition we do have mains voltage electricity aboard,
which is fine for charging mobile phones or toothbrushes even at sea.

What food is available ?
Food is of the highest priority aboard Enigma. Pies are good! Food will be
prepared and served throughout the trip, and most tastes are catered for.
Check before you bring your own, as we might have it aboard already. If you
have any special dietary requirements inform the Skipper well in advance so
you can be catered for. Plenty of spare food is always carried aboard so do
not worry, you will not get hungry, and the cooker still works even in rough
weather, so there will always be a good supply of hot food and drinks.

How do I get to the boat?
'Enigma' is at Ocean Village Marina, Southampton.
There is plenty of parking in the various Marina Car Parks. The nearest car
park to the boat is through a lifting barrier, and access to the marina pontoon
is through a gate with a keycode entry system, so to gain entry to the car
park you will need to ring the Skipper on arrival.
Within a short walk of the car park there is a Tesco Express with off licence
and cash machine. Directions...

What If I feel seasick?
The sea conditions are rarely rough in Southampton Water and any of the other
rivers and harbours. The waves can be quite steep and short in the Solent,
but it is only when further out at sea when the swell really builds up. Because
sea sickness can completely ruin your sailing experience it is taken very
seriously so we have dedicated a full section to the subject. If you know
more, you won't get scared easily. Fear exacerbates sea sickness! On board
we have a range of different types of sea sickness remedies. We also have
a good selection of the usual household drugs, such as anti acids and headache
tablets. If taking any medicine on board, read the manufacturers information
if you are not familiar with the brand, in case you are allergic or they conflict
with any other medicine you are taking. In addition we carry a comprehensive
first aid kit. More...

Can I be contacted at sea ?
The boat stays in range of Mobile phones most of the time, even at sea. So
if you bring your mobile with you, you can stay in contact with home. There
are both mains and cigar lighter sockets available for charging, even when
offshore.

What Safety Equipment does Enigma carry?
Safety is the most important thing at sea, there are no lay-bys to pull into
if you get into trouble, so it is vital that all the yachts systems are kept
in tip top condition all year round. Enigma carries a full complement of regularly
maintained life saving equipment, Radar Reflector, First Aid & Fire Fighting
equipment and for the 2006 season was fitted with new VHF Class D DSC Marine
radio equipment, a new satellite navigation system, and AIS and NAVTEX receivers
which have all been installed in accordance with SOLAS recommendations, and
we carry engine spares, electrical spares, emergency repair kits and tools
for everything and anything. There are clear safety procedures, and first
time crew will be given a safety briefing, fitted with a lifejacket, and shown
the location of the various pieces of safety equipment and how to operate
them. There is a vessel safety card aboard which gives instruction on the
essentials, and where things are stored. You can view it in advance using
the links below. Safety card...
